Ice Storm-Local communities connecting through social media in a time of crisis!

by Dan O'Halloran on December 19, 2008

I’m sure many of you have felt the affects or know someone who has been affected by the recent ice storm. As we all know technology has completely changed the way we communicate and follow the news. Some companies have embraced this change and others are slowly starting to pick it up.  I was very impressed by PSNH & WMUR with their twitter updates and the Union Leader with their blog about the progress of restoring power throughout NH.  We are truly in a world of instant communication and in times of crisis it is awesome at how well information can be distributed to those in need.

I lost power for 5days and I just want to give a quick thank you to all the power company employees who have worked around the clock to restore power throughout our state. I also want to thank their families for being so understanding of the pivotal role these people have played in helping NH.

The links below will take you to pictures posted by PSNH, their RSS feed, and their twitter page.

I think it is awesome how the utility companies and local news companies have taken the step into the Web 2.0 world to reach out and better communicate with their customers. There has been a lot of criticism on how PSNH has handled the recent ice storm but I think they have done a great job using multiple mediums to inform NH residents of recent updates in their local communities.

I have also started to see many other uses of social media by local businesses. The Concord Monitor has incorporated RSS feeds for their online news as well as Podcasts and blogs and the Nashua Telegraph now has a mobile site in beta!
