One of my favorite local hikes is up to Lake Solitude and the White Cliffs. Depending on how fast you like to go, it’s an awesome 2 to 3 hour hike. If you have dogs and like to hike with them, this is a perfect as there are plenty of brook crossings and of course the lake at the top, so no need to carry water for your dogs.
The trail head (Andrew Brook Trail) is located about a mile up Mountain Rd in Newbury NH just after the 3rd bridge on the right. There is a decent sized dirt shoulder to park your car, but no visible trail head signs from the road. If you are hiking on the weekend chances are good you’ll see plenty of cars parked here as it is a fairly popular spot. I recently hiked it this past Friday and I was the only person on the trail which was just awesome having the whole place to myself!
You can also continue past Lake Solitude and White Cliffs and go right to the top of Mount Sunapee as well. This weekend Sunapee is running the lift for their Sky Rides which is a fun quick way to the top.
As you get to the top you’ll come across this cool section of ledge just before the view opens up

Nice travelogue, Dan! When T is healed enough, we’ll have to try it (sans dog).
